Highest writing quality with high environmental protection

PILOT Pen is an international company with Japanese roots. For over 100 years, the company has stood for the development and innovation of new writing instruments. Not least because of its roots, the characteristically Japanese long-term view of a future in harmony with the environment is formative. Reducing the impact of production on the environment is just as important as manufacturing attractive products for consumers.

“Recycle - Reduce - Refill - Reclaim” - these are the cornerstones of our environmental commitment. PILOT Pen Germany with its branches in Germany and Austria has been ClimatePartner certified since 2020. CO2 emissions are continuously reduced and all currently unavoidable emissions are offset 100% by investing in climate protection projects. The longevity of the products is supported by a wide range of refills. The company has also offered a wide range of products made from recycled plastic for many years. The company's aim is to continue to expand its environmentally friendly range and keep its environmental impact as low as possible.

WRITE BETTER WITH LESS

Respect for the environment is clearly anchored in the company's philosophy and plays just as important a role as the quality and innovative strength of its products. With the 3R strategy (Recycle - Reduce - Refill), much has already been achieved in this respect in recent years. In 2022, the strategy was extended to include “Reclaim” as the fourth R, thus further expanding sustainable action.

Step 1: Recycle

The company is increasingly using recycled plastic in the manufacture of its products, as this means that less oil is used in the production of writing instruments, which helps to conserve natural resources and reduces the CO2 impact of the products. A large number of PILOT products are already made from recycled plastic - most notably the B2P gel pen. It consists of 89%* recycled PET bottles. In addition, the popular FriXion Ball and FriXion Light models have also been made from at least 50%* recycled plastic in all colors and line widths since summer 2020, as has the G2-7 gel pen (Made in EU) in black, blue, red and green, which is made from 70%* recycled material. The aim is to continuously expand the use of recycled plastic.

Step 2: Reduce

The second step is to reduce the amount of plastic in packaging. The amount of plastic used in packaging has already been significantly reduced in recent years. Completely plastic-free paper-based packaging has even been developed for the eCommerce business. The set packaging has also been converted to recyclable cardboard. For example, one of the bestsellers: the FriXion refill set of 3.

Step 3: Refill

In addition to recycling and reduction, the refillability of products plays a key role as a third point, in which end consumers also play a decisive role. The aim is for writing instruments to no longer be perceived as disposable products, but to be refilled in the same way as electronic devices, for example - instead of recharging the battery, in this case it is replacement refills, which PILOT offers in a wide range of colors and line widths. Replacement refills are available for many of the company's products: just three refills can reduce the CO2 impact by up to 70% compared to buying the corresponding quantity of pens.

Step 4: Reclaim

Every year, between 8 and 12 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans, rivers and lakes. All of this waste ultimately ends up on the seabed, on beaches and riverbanks and often ends up in the human body in the form of microplastics. This is because it can take several thousand years for plastic to completely decompose.

The flood of plastic is also particularly problematic for wildlife, as they mistake the microplastics for food and often die in agony as a result. PILOT does not want this sad reality to become the undoing of our planet. Accordingly, the company has been going one step further in terms of environmental protection since 2022 and, in addition to recycling, also specifically supports the recovery of raw materials. To this end, PILOT Pen is cooperating with “TerraCycle”, the world's leading company in the reprocessing of materials that are difficult to recycle. The plastic waste collected and recycled by “TerraCycle” in natural marine areas is purchased by the company and then used to manufacture the B2P Gel and B2P Ecoball. With this step, PILOT Pen wants to support the preservation of our oceans and their inhabitants.
